Uluberia Municipality to launch immediate raids on illegal water extraction from municipal pipelines

Uluberia Municipality is preparing to conduct raids targeting illegal extraction of drinking water from municipal pipelines. Repeated complaints have been received regarding individuals using motorcycles to tap water illegally and channel it to their homes. The municipality has also identified multiple cases of unauthorized water connections being used by citizens, affecting overall water distribution.

The municipality serves 74,300 households across its 32 wards with filtered drinking water delivered three times daily. The Jagdishpur water project, located in Ward 24, produces 55.5 million liters of drinking water every day. Water is supplied through 14 overhead tanks positioned in different areas of the municipality to ensure distribution.

Despite this large-scale water production, several wards have reported inadequate water supply. Investigations revealed that some residents installed pumps directly in the pipelines to extract water illegally, bypassing approved reservoir systems. This unauthorized use has led to uneven water availability across the municipality. Multiple cases of illegal water connections have also been recorded.

Uluberia Municipality officials, including Chairman Abhay Das, Vice Chairman Inamur Rahman, and Water Department Chairman Akbar Sheikh, stated the municipality’s commitment to providing free drinking water to residents. The municipality plans to build three new overhead tanks in wards 6, 10, and 31 to improve supply. Strict legal action will be taken against those found with illegal water connections, in accordance with the Municipal Act.
